...In 1989, Yasmeen Ghauri was a McDonald’s employee. A year later, she was in the fashion biz. But she lasted a lot longer, appearing on virtually every major fashion-magazine cover. At 17, the dark-eyed beauty made an appointment at a Montreal modeling agency, and her career began. She moved to New York in August 1990 to model full-time. Her first major cover was with Elle Magazine in January 1990.
She became the face of Christian Dior and Anne Klein in 1991. In January, she was photographed by Steven Meisel for the cover of Italian Vogue and toward the end of the year, she appeared in British and Italian Vogue editorials. Photographer Patrick Demarchelier, who photographed her for the Italian issue, called her his favourite subject.
In 1992, she landed a contract with Victoria’s Secret and became a face of Valentino couture and Versace. Later, she walked the controversial Gianni Versace "Bondage" show in Milan. Ghauri became the face of Hermès and Lanvin in 1993 and was photographed by Gilles Bensimon for Elle.
And her height made her the star of Donna Karan’s fall debut. Yasmeen spent most of ‘94 and ‘95 on the runways of Milan, Paris and New York, not delving into print work until late ‘95. Her natural beauty–not to mention her amazing ability to wear clothes–quickly won her regular work for Isaac Mizrahi, Chanel and Givenchy. She appeared in the 1995 documentary Unzipped by Isaac Mizrahi. She walked the 1996 annual Victoria's Secret Fashion Show.
In June ‘96, she pulled out of a major runway show for Yves Saint Laurent at the last minute, igniting rumors of retirement. The rumors were actually well informed, she did indeed retire to start a family with her husband Ralph Bernstein.
At the end of the post you will discover how is Yasmeen today... what a class!
